Exact Deskrawl socket costs from the 1.0 build: 100 ore plus 400 gold per item level, level 30 to unlock, and the five slots that cannot be socketed.
Deskrawl Gems and Socket Costs: Every Slot and the Level 30 Gate
Socking an item costs 100 Earth Essence plus 400 gold times the item's own level, and the item must be item level 30 or higher. That is three fields in the shipped GameConfig asset, unchanged by any setting, gem or upgrade. Only six of the eleven equipment slots take sockets at all: Weapon three, Chest and Pants two each, Helm, Ring and Necklace one each. Boots, Belt, Gloves, Shoulder and Back take zero, permanently.
Everything below is read out of the 1.0 launch build (released 2026-09-28, live patch 1.0.0g as of 2026-09-30). Where a number comes from a player rather than the data files, it is labelled as such and not reconciled.
The socket price, field by field

The three fields live in GameConfig; the gate lives in another asset, ItemizationConfig.MinLevelForSockets = 30. The material is ore3 internally but displays as Earth Essence — that is the name in your inventory, and no guide will tell you the asset id behind it.
| Config field | Asset | Value |
|---|---|---|
SocketMaterial |
GameConfig |
ore3 — Earth Essence (Legendary material, sells for 500 gold) |
SocketMaterialAmount |
GameConfig |
100 per socket |
SocketGoldPerItemLevel |
GameConfig |
400 gold, multiplied by the item's level |
MinLevelForSockets |
ItemizationConfig |
30 |
The gold term scales with the item, the material term does not. Gold per socket, straight off the two constants:
| Item level | Gold, 1 socket | Gold, full 10-socket set |
|---|---|---|
| 30 (the gate) | 12,000 | 120,000 |
| 34 | 13,600 | 136,000 |
| 40 | 16,000 | 160,000 |
| 50 | 20,000 | 200,000 |
| 60 | 24,000 | 240,000 |
| 70 (level cap) | 28,000 | 280,000 |
A fully socketed set is 10 sockets, so the set column is the single-socket column times ten. The cheapest way to hold most of the sockets is a low-level Chest or Pants; the most expensive single decision is a three-socket Weapon. If you are still choosing a base to build on, the zone and level order guide matters here, because the cost of every future socket is locked in by which item you socket first.
Which slots take sockets, and the five that never will
ItemizationConfig.GemSocketsBySlot is a list of eleven SlotSocketConfig records, each pairing an EquipSlotType with a MaxSockets integer. It covers all eleven slots, and the five zeroes are not missing data — they are explicit entries.
| Slot | Max sockets | Equippable items in that slot |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | 3 | 32 |
| Chest | 2 | 22 |
| Pants | 2 | 19 |
| Helm | 1 | 23 |
| Ring | 1 | 20 |
| Necklace | 1 | 17 |
| Boots | 0 | 15 |
| Belt | 0 | 15 |
| Gloves | 0 | 18 |
| Shoulder | 0 | 19 |
| Back | 0 | 9 |
The item counts come from the eleven gear directories under items/equipments/, which hold 209 pieces in total. If you count 219 files in that folder instead, the extra ten are the randomequipments/ entries — Type = RandomEquipment, Common rarity, one per slot for everything except Back. Each carries an EquipSlot field, so counting that field without filtering on Type quietly adds one to ten of the eleven rows above.
Boots, Belt, Gloves, Shoulder and Back are hard-wired to zero sockets. If you are holding a Divine Back item or a Legendary Gloves and hunting for an empty socket on it, there is nothing to find — the item is complete as it is. Spend your Earth Essence on the Weapon instead.
That leaves a hard ceiling of 10 sockets on a character, no matter how many items you cycle through. It also means five slots are pure affix rolls for their entire life, which is worth knowing before you start hunting a pair of gloves.
Where the 100 Earth Essence comes from
Earth Essence is not an ordinary drop. It appears in exactly three places in the data files, and none of them is a monster table.
| Source | Config | Yield |
|---|---|---|
| Salvaging a Legendary | GameConfig.SalvageYields |
BaseAmount 5 + 0.025 x item level, chance 1 (always) |
| Salvaging a Divine | GameConfig.SalvageYields |
BaseAmount 10 + 0.15 x item level, chance 1 (always) |
| Lucky Wheel segment | LuckyWheel_Gambler segment 4 |
14 per spin, weight 6 of 120 total (5%) |
Nothing below Rare yields it. Common and Uncommon salvage produce only Iron Ore and Soul Shards; Rare adds Gold Ore. Earth Essence is a high-rarity economy: you cannot farm it out of trash mobs, only out of gear you are willing to destroy.
The item's own tooltip text explains why the scarcity exists. Earth Essence is described in-game as "A concentrated essence of primal earth, released when powerful equipment is salvaged. Used as a reagent for upgrading equipment" — the description never mentions socketing, because socketing is not its headline job.
That matters, because the same material is an upgrade reagent. UpgradeRecipeLegendary consumes 3 Iron Ore, 2 Gold Ore and 1 Earth Essence per upgrade; UpgradeRecipeDivine consumes 5, 3 and 2. Neither charges gold (GoldCost: 0) — the gold in a +10 run is the upgrade fee, the Earth Essence is the gear-specific reagent. Every socket you open is one to two fewer upgrades available on your best gear.
Run the salvage yield against the socket bill:
| Item level | Legendary yields | Divine yields | Legendarys to fill 100 | Divines to fill 100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 34 | 5.85 | 15.1 | ~17 | ~7 |
| 50 | 6.25 | 17.5 | 16 | ~6 |
| 70 | 6.75 | 20.5 | ~15 | ~5 |
So one socket costs you roughly six Divine salvages or seventeen Legendary ones. Socketing a whole ten-socket set is a Divine-salvage project, not a Legendary one. The rarity page covers why Divine pieces are as rare as they are, and the life skills guide covers the auto-salvage carriage filters that turn this from a manual chore into idle income.
Which gem cuts drop, and which three do not
There are exactly 36 gems — six stones times six cuts — in items/gems/, each a GemData asset with three parallel bonus arrays: ArmorBonuses, AccessoryBonuses, WeaponBonuses, keyed to a GemCategory enum of Armor / Accessory / Weapon. One gem, three possible stat payloads, resolved by what you socket it into. Which of the eleven slots map to which category is resolved inside a stripped method and is not in the data files.
The cut names are shape names, not tiers. Nobody finds "tier 4" by searching, so here they are in full:
| Cut | Display name (Ruby example) | Drops from | Gem sell price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Raw Sphere Ruby | level 30–34 | 2,000 |
| 2 | Chipped Teardrop Ruby | level 35–39 | 4,000 |
| 3 | Rough Square Ruby | level 40–44 | 6,000 |
| 4 | Polished Rhombus Ruby | level 45+, no cap | 8,000 |
| 5 | Flawless Hexagon Ruby | never drops (MinDropLevel 999) |
10,000 |
| 6 | Radiant Octagon Ruby | never drops (MinDropLevel 999) |
12,000 |
The same six stones — Ruby, Amethyst, Diamond, Topaz, Emerald, Sapphire — carry these prefixes. Every tier-1 stat line is identical across the six: an attribute for armor (Strength / Dexterity / Intelligence / Thorns / MaxHealthPercent / CooldownReduction), a damage reduction for accessories, and an elemental damage bonus for weapons. Diamond is the physical outlier: on a weapon it grants DamagePhysical, and in armour it grants CooldownReduction rather than an attribute.
Gems roll on the encounter tier, from LootConfig:
| Encounter | GemDropChance |
|---|---|
| Normal enemy | 0.01 |
| Elite | 0.06 |
| Miniboss | 0.10 |
| Boss | 0.12 |
| Mythic boss | 0.12 |
A normal trash mob is a 1% shot. A boss is twelve times better, and the mythic-boss tier is not better still — Boss and Mythic Boss are tied at 0.12. Farming gems is a boss problem, and the drop rate page has the full picture including what 1.0.0g changed.
Upgrading a gem: ten into one, and the real bill
There are 30 upgrade recipes in recipes/gemupgrades/, five per stone, and they are the plainest recipes in the game. RecipeData has no success-chance field at all, so gem upgrades are deterministic — ten in, one out, no roll. That is the opposite of the +10 gear upgrade, where the chance array drops from 100% to 10% and a finished run is a 0.09% event. Do not carry the gear-upgrade fear over to gems.
The gold ladder is the same for all six stones:
| Step | Recipe | Input | Gold per craft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 → 2 | GemUpgradeRuby2 |
10x tier 1 | 300 |
| 2 → 3 | GemUpgradeRuby3 |
10x tier 2 | 1,300 |
| 3 → 4 | GemUpgradeRuby4 |
10x tier 3 | 5,500 |
| 4 → 5 | GemUpgradeRuby5 |
10x tier 4 | 23,000 |
| 5 → 6 | GemUpgradeRuby6 |
10x tier 5 | 100,000 |
Compounded, that is brutal. Making one Radiant Octagon Ruby from nothing but drops takes 100,000 Raw Sphere Rubies and 5,180,000 gold, because the cheapest craft has to be repeated 10,000 times. But tiers 1 through 4 all drop, and tier 4 has no level cap, so you never need to start from the bottom:
| Entry cut | Gems needed for 1x tier 6 | Gold from that cut up |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 5 | 10 | 100,000 |
| Tier 4 (Polished Rhombus) | 100 | 330,000 |
| Tier 3 (Rough Square) | 1,000 | 880,000 |
| Tier 2 (Chipped Teardrop) | 10,000 | 2,180,000 |
| Tier 1 (Raw Sphere) | 100,000 | 5,180,000 |
Start harvesting Polished Rhombus gems from level-45 content and you skip fifteen-fold of the gold. That is the single highest-leverage decision in the whole gem system, and it costs you nothing but knowing that cut 4 is the last one that drops.
The 130,000 gold question, left open
A launch-week Steam thread is the most-cited complaint about this system, and it is the one number on this page I cannot reconcile:
Official source: Deskrawl Close Beta - Launching Aug 19th! — "Gems, Gem Merchant and equipment sockets." That line is the whole official announcement for the system; the developer has never published a socket price.
The player post, quoted verbatim, reads: "i have to pay 130k to add a socket to a level 34 weapon?:D and to upgrade a gem you need 10 of each? Thats crazy i love it." (thread).
Here is the whole discrepancy, stated as arithmetic rather than argument:
- The config formula for one socket on a level-34 item is 34 x 400 = 13,600 gold.
- Ten sockets on a full level-34 set is 136,000 gold — within 4.6% of the quoted figure.
- 130,000 divided by 13,600 is 9.56 sockets, not one.
- Separately, the five gem-upgrade gold values summed once each total exactly 130,100.
There is no field in GameConfig that multiplies the socket price by roughly ten. The two readings that fit — the player opened several sockets across several items in one session, or the number came off a different screen — both sit within a few percent of the config total for a full set. Neither is confirmed. Treat 13,600 per level-34 socket as the config value and 130,000 as a player-reported figure, and check the live UI number in your own game before committing 100 Earth Essence. The rest of that thread is useful context: another player assumes the cost does not scale with item level, which the config contradicts, and a third notes that socketing stops mattering once your gold sinks are paid for.
Vendors, removal, and the trade rule to read first
Three NPCs carry the GemNPC role — Henry in the home town, Leif in the snow zone, Rashid in the desert — all labelled "Gem vendor and removal". They buy gems, sell them back, and take them out for 10,000 gold, a fixed value serialized on the GemRemovalPanel component in the shipped game scene rather than in a config table.
Installing a gem is a drag and drop onto an open socket, and requires both an open socket and an item above the level-30 requirement (player walkthrough thread).
The in-game string is explicit: "Upgraded or socketed items, and runes that have been equipped, cannot be traded." If you are shopping the auction house for a Divine Back piece with sockets already in it, that item will never appear — read the Steam market and auction house guide before you spend Earth Essence on anything you might resell.
FAQ
Can I socket a level 25 weapon?
No. ItemizationConfig.MinLevelForSockets is 30, and it gates the item's level, not your character's. Community walkthroughs agree: the item needs both a socket and level 30 or above.
Why can I not socket my gloves, boots, belt, shoulders or back?
Because GemSocketsBySlot sets MaxSockets: 0 for all five. Those slots have no gem support in this build and there is no upgrade path to add one.
Which slot should I fill first? Cheapest capacity first if you are material-poor: Chest and Pants give you two sockets each for one material unit, and Helm, Ring and Necklace give one each for the same 100 Earth Essence. The Weapon is the most expensive per socket but also the only three-socket item, and its three weapon-side gems (Fire Damage and its five siblings) are the strongest single-stat multipliers in the gem table.
Is gem upgrading a gamble?
No. RecipeData has no chance field, and each recipe is a flat 10-to-1 conversion with a fixed gold cost. Failure is impossible; only the gold bill is real.
Can I get a Flawless Hexagon or Radiant Octagon gem by farming?
No. Both have MinDropLevel: 999 in the item data, which is above the level cap of 70. The only source is the upgrade recipe book.
Do gems work on every slot? One gem carries three stat payloads and the game picks one by category — armor, accessory or weapon. That a gem is a poor stat in one category is not a reason to skip it in another, but the exact slot-to-category mapping is not published and I could not locate it in the shipped data tables.
